VIRALUKKETHA VEEKKAM A movie review by Balaji Balasubramaniam Cast: Livingston, Vivek, Vadivelu, Kushbu, Kanaga, Kovai Sarala, Nasser, Urvasi, Jaiganesh Music: Deva Direction: V.Sekhar Spend within your budget; respect women; share household chores - these morals are taught to men in an unconvincing manner in this movie which is aimed squarely at the womenfolk. But having selected comedy as the means to put forth his opinions, the director fails in fashioning entertaining sequences resulting in the movie feeling more like a string of low-budget documentaries. Sivashankar(Livingston), Kabali(Vadivelu) and Ramanathan(Vivek) are mechanics in a motor company. Basically irresponsible, they are deep in debt and yet squander their salary on drinks and gifts.
Their wives Suguna(Kushbu), Ranjitham(Kovai Sarala) and Malu(Kanaga) carry the load of housework on their shoulders and are routinely the target of demeaning words from their landlord and the money lender. But inspite of the financial problems, the husbands are vehemently against the thought of their wives working. When a new couple(Nasser and Urvasi), both working, moves into the neighborhood, the wives notice their comfortable life and become interested in working too And they start going to work once their husbands lose their jobs and sink further into debt.
Naturally, the husbands have a hard time adjusting to this change with their male egos being threatened and this creates lots of heartburns and problems. The first half moves pretty quickly but the entire second half drags. Once the wives start working, the story comes to a standstill with the director resorting to increasingly ridiculous situations to prolong the conflict. And for all the stubbornness of the husbands till the very last moment (with his daughter fighting for her life, Livingston asks the doctor to use his money for the operation and not his wife's), their change of heart is too abrupt and hurried.
Though the ultimate lesson of the movie is that menfolk should accept equality, the initial portions of the Vadivelu-Sarala story, with Vadivelu at his chauvinistic worst, are tough to ingest. Livingston and Kushbu create a believable couple struggling with financial problems. Many of their dialogs are realistic and their well-tuned performances make us sympathise with them. Kovai Sarala is the only other actress who makes a mark.
Initially scared, before firing up and turning the tables on her husband, she's responsible for most of the rare laughs in the movie. At the other end of the spectrum is Vadivelu whose loud rants actually decrease the comic effect. He needs to learn that shouting out a dialog does not automatically make it funny. Vivek and Kanaga are the least effective among the three couples.
Nasser and Urvasi do not have too much screen time. With the majority of the movie taking place indoors, there is a stage-drama feel to the entire film. Deva's songs are just hard on the ears.
